When to Call 911 or Go to the Emergency Room
Some symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention — not a dental office. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room if you experience any of the following:
- Swelling that is spreading to your throat, neck, or is affecting your ability to breathe or swallow
- Uncontrolled bleeding that does not slow with firm pressure
- Suspected jaw fracture following trauma
- High fever accompanied by facial swelling or difficulty opening your mouth
- Loss of consciousness or confusion following a head or facial injury
A hospital emergency room is not equipped to perform dental procedures, but it can manage life-threatening infections, control bleeding, and stabilize trauma. Once you are medically stable, contact our office for follow-up dental care.
Urgent Dental Concerns We Evaluate
If you are experiencing any of the following, call our office. Dr. Qureshi will assess your situation and discuss appropriate next steps.
What Happens When You Call
Describe your concern
When you call, a member of our team will ask about your symptoms, how long you have been experiencing them, and whether you have any relevant medical history.
Assessment and scheduling
Based on what you describe, we will advise whether your concern can be evaluated during our regular hours, and work to schedule an appointment as soon as availability allows.
Examination and treatment options
At your appointment, Dr. Qureshi will examine the affected area, which may include X-rays. He will explain his findings and discuss treatment options with you before any work begins.
While You Wait for Your Appointment
These general measures may help manage discomfort until you are seen. They are not a substitute for professional evaluation.
Toothache
Rinse gently with warm salt water. Over-the-counter pain relievers (taken as directed on the label) may reduce discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
Knocked-out permanent (adult) tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If possible, gently rinse it without scrubbing and place it back in the socket, or keep it moist in a small container of milk or saliva. Call our office immediately — time is a significant factor.
Knocked-out baby (primary) tooth
Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. Replanting baby teeth is not recommended and can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Call our office so we can assess the area and advise on next steps.
Cracked or broken tooth
Rinse with warm water. If there is swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek. Avoid chewing on that side.
Lost filling or crown
Temporary dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can protect the area until your appointment. Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods.
Soft tissue bleeding
Apply firm, gentle pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for 10–15 minutes. If bleeding does not slow, seek emergency medical care.
